Volunteer Opportunities

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS

HELP! Will you spend some time to help the Calvert County Historical Society? Our activities are expanding to meet growing needs, but we really need you to help us create a dynamic CCHS to meet these requests.

WE WANT YOU! Do you think you have nothing to offer? Well, think again! We have many projects to meet a variety of interests and talents.

_ You can spend as many or as few hours as you wish.

_ One-time and longterm opportunities are available.

_ You can spend time at Linden, or you can work from your own home.

_  Some projects lend themselves to using computers, while others don’t.

YOU! could become involved with one of these efforts, or a different one that you think would be interesting and would like to explore.

_ Creating an index for runaway slave ads or Freedmen’s Bureau correspondence.

_ Transcribing the runaway slave ads or Freedmen’s Bureau correspondence.

_  Creating an index for what’s in each of our nearly 750 family files – or __ historic home files – or __ subject files. This would be a great multiple volunteer project and would help researchers as well as CCHS staff.

_ Transcribing various correspondence, such as letters concerning families and property. Transcribing could take the form of hand writing files so that another volunteer could type them or typing them directly from the original format.

_ Helping locate and typing articles for the newsletter. Did you notice this one’s late and also a two-month combined newsletter? You could help the newsletter get published on time.

_ Researching a specific element of Calvert County history and adding it to the Archives collection, publishing it in the annual Calvert Historian, or turning it into a book!

_  Scanning photographs to create digitized images and indexing them for easy retrieval ! Being a guest speaker at our Third-Thursday Brown Bag lunch – share your stories about growing up in the County, or discuss some element of Calvert life.

_ Conducting a workshop on some topic related to Calvert County, how to research or how to interpret what resources you find, for instance.

_ Helping identify, design and execute programs at Linden. This could be a photographic display or one featuring local authors or artists. Or perhaps a musical program might be of interest.

_ Helping plan and implement a public relations plan for CCHS to help introduce the Society to the public.

_ Identifying which records should be shared online and developing an effective, safeguarded method for doing so.

_ Creating a vision for updating the gift shop and identifying merchandise that represents Calvert’s rich history while transforming the gift shop into that gotta go-there place.

_ Creating and delivering “living history” programs by incorporating Linden’s newly rehabilitated outbuildings.

_ Identifying opportunities for, and developing fundraising efforts.

OPPORTUNITIES for volunteering are endless. Won’t you please take a few moments today to contact Leila Boyer to discuss your ideas, your desires and your availability? We’ll be glad you did, and we’re sure that you will be, too! Leila can be reached at 410.535.2452 or cchsadmin@calverthistory.org. If you’d like to stop by Linden and talk with her, please call ahead of time to make sure she’ll be in the office!

~Thank you!

About calverthistory

The Calvert County Historical Society, Inc. was founded in 1953 by a small group of concerned Calvert County residents. On May 5, 1954, articles of incorporation were made part of the public record which stated that the main purpose of the Society was to further the collection of historical data and records concerned with Calvert County and other materials bearing on the history of the State and Nation, including private letters, documents, manuscripts, early events and acts as recorded in structures and works of public and private nature. From a newly established Headquarters Room on site at Linden, visitors can find a wealth of valuable early county history. Gifts to the Society over the years have been varied and interesting, and have made important contributions to the understanding of the uniqueness and richness of the County's history. The research library continues to grow in volume and diversity. Family papers describing first person accounts of historical events, wills, family Bibles, original manuscripts, photographs, published histories and a growing video library are but a small part of the collection. Portraits, pieces of furniture and artifacts have also been entrusted to the Society's care. Beyond the collections, the Society's broad mission included establishing a roadside marker program as early as 1956. The first committee found only three historical markers placed by the State Roads Commission. Today, there are twenty nine and the effort continues. A primary goal of the Society was the publishing of a History of Calvert County. In April of 1959, Charles F. Stein presented his manuscript for review and acceptance. A second edition was published as a bicentennial project. (1977)
